From the garden to the Seed House

On their journey from the garden to the Seed House, the seeds pass through several stages. After harvesting, they are threshed, cleaned, dried, sorted and labelled, then placed in storage jars and stored.

In seed production, each plant family and each species has its own needs. Plants may be hermaphroditic, monoecious, dioecious, annual, biennial, perennial, self-pollinating, insect-pollinated or wind-pollinated. All these characteristics are considered during planning and respected later in the garden.

This wealth of practical knowledge used to be passed down from generation to generation. Today, books and video tutorials are also available for those interested. We document our work in photographs and share them on our blog. We are also happy to share our practical knowledge in person at our farm.

We often grow several varieties of the same plant species in our gardens. To prevent cross-pollination between them, they are isolated by timing, distance or physical barriers, or pollinated by hand.

The Humus association, based in Petrinzel, Romania, is dedicated to preserving traditional heritage fruit and vegetable varieties. Through various activities and projects, we strive to create and preserve the greatest possible biodiversity. We maintain a propagation and display garden, a gardening library and a seed collection. Many supporters from the region grow heritage varieties from the seed collection in their own gardens. This ensures that the seeds remain healthy and adaptable.

It is very important to us that people enjoy gardening, whether they live in the city or the countryside, and whether they are young or young at heart. That is why we promote the cultivation of perennial, robust, low-maintenance local varieties.
